TOEFL Preparation CLasses

TOEFL iBT

Preparation classes are offered at Ottawa ESL schools.

Click here for details on the new test.

The program uses interactive lessons and practice activities in the classroom.

The TOEFL test is offered in 2 testing formats: Internet-based test (iBT) and paper-based test (PBT). The format you take depends on your test center location.

It measures the ability of students of English as a Second Language to understand and use English as it is spoken, written and heard in colleges and universities in North America. Most people who take the test are planning to study in English at colleges and universities. Some government agencies, scholarship programs, and certification agencies use the scores scores to evaluate English proficiency.

The score is valid for two years. It is then is deleted from the official database. Colleges and universities usually consider only the most recent score, if you have taken the test more than once.

Computer-Based Test
Note:The Computer-Based Test (CBT) was discontinued in September 2006.

Click here for details on the new Internet based TOEFL test.

The computer-based test is usually offered at colleges and universities or at special testing centres. It has four sections:

  • Listening measures the ability to understand English as it is spoken in North America.
  • Structure measures the ability to recognize language that is appropriate for standard written English.
  • Reading measures the ability to understand short passages that are similar in topic and style to academic texts used in North American colleges and universities.
  • Writing measures the ability to write in English on an assigned topic.

English language skills in reading, listening and writing are tested on computer in most regions of the world.

A paper-based version of the test is also available in some areas.

Paper-Based TestThe paper-based test has three sections:

  • Listening Comprehension measures the ability to understand spoken English.
  • Structure and Written Expression measures the ability to recognize standard written English.
  • Reading Comprehension measures the ability to read and understand nontechnical material.

The paper-based test takes about 3.5 hours to complete.

The Test of Written English (TWEŽ) is also required for everyone taking the paper-based test.
