Citizenship Test Preparation Class
for ESL Learners

The Citizenship Test Preparation Class for ESL learners is open to permanent residents of Canada who are applying for citizenship.

To take this course you must be a Permanent resident of Canada living in Ontario and have completed Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level 4 or above.

To become a citizen, you need to speak and listen at a Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) Level 4 or higher.

This means that you can:

  • take part in short conversations about common topics
  • understand simple instructions, questions and directions
  • use basic grammar, including simple structures and tenses
  • show you know enough common words and phrases to answer questions and express yourself.

if you have never been in our school system before or a new learner you may have to complete a language assessment through the Ottawa Y-Language Assessment and Referral Centre (Y-LARC). For more information on how to contact the assessment centre click here

In this course you will learn:

  • Facts about Canada, its history, geography and symbols
  • Canada’s political system: multi-party democracy, government, elections, human rights, etc.
  • Canada’s justice system
  • The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship
  • Study questions for the Canadian citizenship test
